Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and the Transition from Manuscript to Print

Course Overview

This independent study will investigate the text fo the Canterbury Tales in context of its transmission in manuscript and in print, as a whole as well as individual portions, from late fourteenth-century composition through the end of the sixteenth century, including how manuscript and print contribute to differences in reception(s) and meaning(s).

Course Goals:  Instructor will...

Introduce the text of Canterbury Tales
Provide support in reading the original Middle English
Discuss the history of the book and the transition from manuscript to print

Course Objectives:  Student will...

Demonstrate understanding of the original language of the Tales
Demonstrate facility with the theoretical foundations of the history of the book in general and specifically the transition from manuscript to print
Demonstrate understanding of the mechanics of manuscript and print production and how they affect textual forms and distribution
